Guidelines
CAVS IN SERVICE GUIDELINES*
1. Community service must be volunteer and performed for a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization or agency approved by the Cavs in Service Board. To obtain approval for an agency/project not listed on the website, fill out the Service Opportunity Approval Form before performing the service and submit to the Faculty advisor (Jill Escalante, cis@ltisdschools.org) via email or hardcopy. The form can be found on this website.
2. The following activities DO NOT COUNT:
Activities done as part of a class for academic credit or an extracurricular event.
Activity for a school organization or teacher.
Activities performed during LTHS school hours.
Fundraisers for your extra curricular activity or school organization.
Volunteer work for a political campaign.
Volunteering to coach/mentor, another school team or organization that is required by your sport/organization.
Performing/playing/coaching with that school organization in any venue.
Court-mandated community service.
Working in any capacity for LTHS must be pre-approved.
Donations of money or items for service hours.
3. No more than 8 hours per individual day can be counted without prior approval. (i.e. Relay for Life) The total number of volunteer hours for certain activities may be limited at the discretion of the CIS Board, Faculty Advisor, or Principal.
4. Students are responsible for completing the Community Service Verification Form, turning it in to the Faculty Advisor, Mrs. Escalante, in Room C100 for approval and data entry.
5. Students are required to verify the accuracy of the records on the CIS web site, and MUST RETAIN COPIES OF ALL CIS VERIFICATION FORMS in case of any discrepancy. If there is a discrepancy in the hours reported on the website, students will need to submit copies of ALL their CIS Verification Forms with the question/discrepancy attached and turn it in to the Faculty Advisor, Mrs. Escalante, for investigation. (DO NOT SUBMIT A NEW CIS FORM FOR PREVIOUSLY TURNED IN HOURS) It is the student’s responsibility to follow up with the advisor if he/she is not notified of a resolution.
6. Students must complete 100 hours of service to receive a red Cavs in Service community service cord awarded at graduation. For students that have moved into the district during their high school career, a prorated amount of hours based on the number of years attending LT will be required. i.e. if a student starts at LT his/her junior year, 50 hours of service will be required to earn the community service cord. It is the student's responsibility to inform the Cavs In Service sponsor of when he/she entered LT, otherwise the requirement of 100 hours will be assumed.
7. If you have questions about whether an agency or organization not listed on the website will qualify for community service hours, check with the Faculty Advisor before performing the service. A Service Opportunity Approval Form will need to be filled out by the student or organization to gain approval.
8. At the discretion of the LTHS Principal, any activity can be awarded CIS hours that would not normally qualify. (i.e. Safe Homes attendance, or Leadership camp.)
9. For summer service opportunities: In order to ensure the quality and consistency of our program, the Cavs in Service Board retains the right to approve service hours and providers based on established guidelines. It is the intent of the CIS board to review and approve/decline request in a timely manner. Students are strongly encouraged to get pre-approval of service providers prior to volunteering or committing to the activity to ensure the hours will be certified. If your child is planning to do a summer service activity, it needs to be approved by the CIS board beforehand in order for your child to get service credit for next year. Please check this page to see if the organization is already on the approved list.
10. No parent may verify hours for a student unless the parent is in charge of the 5013c volunteer program, or has approval on a Cavs in Service Opportunity Approval Form.
11. Guidelines for Relay for Life:
a) The maximum amount of hours a student can receive as a team participant will be 8 hours.
b) Committee chair and members may receive additional hours but that will be dependent on verification by event chair as well as the approval of the Cavs In Service board members.
c) Students must use the Cavs In Service Relay for Life form and obtain all signatures and verifications before submitting.
d) Forms without all information will not be accepted.
e) All teams must have an adult sponsor to attend event and verify hours spent at event. An adult sponsor is defined as a participant’s parent or someone of similar age.
f) A minimum of $100 must be raised by the student.
f) Please print legibly.
* The Cavs in Service committee and LTHS principal reserve the right to modify these guidelines as unforeseen service opportunities arise.
